To walk the Dry-stone Route (GR 221) is to discover the built-in dry-stone landscapes
in the Tramuntana mountain range as well as other dry-stone features such as retaining walls, walls, dry-stone fountains,
shelters, snow houses, etc. Additionally the route goes through interesting historic remains. Hikers will encounter the traces
of myths and legends and learn about traditions, customs, gastronomy, craft work, etc.
Once finished this long-distance path will join the Western end of the Tramuntana mountains (Andratx) with the Eastern
end (Pollença) through the towns of Calvià, Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Esporles, Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller and Escorca.
The 150 Km path runs mainly on old bridle ways that wind very close to the higher peaks of the mountain range,
which are mostly over 1,000 m high.
The route is divided into 8 stages. At the end of each stage the hiker will find a refuge located in a restored house
ran by the Consell de Mallorca. The route can be walked partially or as a whole, allowing hikers to tailor the
route according to their needs and available time. Simultaneously, interesting sites and alternative routes to
the main path are suggested.
The fact that the route runs on the old ways of the Tramuntana contributes towards preserving and giving new uses to
heritage. A part of it has disappeared or has suffered an alarming degradation due to the decline of country life.
This project has encouraged an important support among institutions. On the one hand, the restoration of paths
implies collaborating with town halls and private owners. On the other hand, the building of refuges has counted
on the ecologist group GOB (Refuge of La Trapa), Sóller Town Hall (Refuge of Muleta) and the Fundació Castell
d’Alaró (Refuge of s’Hostatgeria).
