EL RAIGUER ITINERARY
MANCOR DEL VALLE
Chapel de Santa Llúcia An example of the architecture
of the time of the repopulation of the island (13th century),
the chapel of Santa Llúcia is one of the smallest
on the island. Nowadays, next to the Chapel there is a House
of Spirituality that belongs to the Order of the Missionaries
of the Sacred Heart. Tel. 971 501 877
LLOSETA
Oratory del Cocó At scarcely a kilometre from
the town of Lloseta stands the Oratory of the Virgen del
Cocó, built in 1878. According to the legend, in the13th
century a Moorish shepherd found the figure of a Virgin near
the d'Aumedrà water course, in a rock which still
preserves a "hole" with curative properties: whoever
sticks his fingers into the hole, called Es Didalet, will
be protected from illness. The oratory experiences its day
of fiesta on the first Wednesday after Easter, when the inhabitants
of Lloseta, Binissalem and Inca go up to the chapel to pray
to the Virgin and celebrate their 'pancaritat'. Tel. 971

| CASTILLO DE ALARÓ At a height of 822
metres, the Puidg d'Alaró, had been an ideal place
for refuge and for observation since remote times. It
was lived in as long ago as talayotic times, and in the
year 902 its inhabitants resisted the invasion of the
Moorish troops. It was also a strongpoint of resistance,
this time Arab, during the 1229 conquest by the Crown
of Aragon. However, the castle of Hisn Alarun, as it
was called by the Moors, is best known for a rather sad
historical event: the siege to which it was subjected
by King Alfons d'Aragó, who had declared war on
King Jaume II of Majorca. As the story has it, two of
its most courageous defenders, Guillem Cabrit and Guillem
Bassa were put to death by being grilled alive, after
the castle had fallen. He reason for such a cruel reprisal
was the ridicule with which the two men had treated the
name of the monarch, by punning with the word "amfós" which
is the name of the fish "dusky perch" in Majorcan.
The walls of the castle, which are so well adapted to
the rock on which they are built that they become one
and the same thing, were built in the 14th century, and
dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Refugi. In the
18th century lodging was available. To get near the castle
one can go up by car as far as the Es Verger house, now
converted into a restaurant. Tel. 971 182 112. |
CAMPANET
Hermitage of Sant Miguel
The hermitage is in the valley of the same name and was one of the first
to be built after the Catalan conquest. The hermitage is said to have
been constructed over the foundations of an old mosque, which in turn
had been built on the site of a Palaeo-christian basilica. The building
has been reformed several times, especially during the 15th century.
The retables in its interior are particularly interesting. To get to
the hermitage, follow the signposts from the village of Campanet, or
take the turning off the Palma to Alcúdia road towards the Cuevas
de Campanet. Tel. 971 516 107

Hermitage of Santa Magdalena
The chapel or hermitage of Santa Magdalena is on the crest of the hill
of the same name, the Puig de Santa Magdalena, about six kilometres
from the town of Inca. Here are records of a hermitage existing there
from soon after the Catalan conquest in 1229. Simplicity is the keynote
of its façade; the entrance has a round arch and a rose window
above it. On the Sunday after Easter Sunday, called Diumenge de l'Àngel
in Majorca, the hermitage is the destination of throngs of pilgrims.

SANTA MARIA
Hermitage of Son Seguí
The buildings of Son Seguí form an architectural complex whose
origins go back to the 17th century. From Son Segui, leading to the top
of a small hill, there is a track that takes one to the hermitage of
Nostra Senyora de la Pau, where hermits were once in residence from the
17th century until the 19th. On the Diumenge de l'Àngel, a pancaritat
is held around the hermitage, which the people of Santa Eugènia,
