The year 2008 is the 800 anniversary of the birth of the king Jaume the First (1208 - 1276). Known as "the Conqueror", he was count of Barcelona, king of Aragón, Valencia and Mallorca, as well as sir of Montpellier. Since the conquest of Majorca (1229), he has became the main referent of our history.
Jaume the First, the Conqueror
Son of Pedro the Catholic and María from Montpellier, he was born in Montpellier in 1208 and died in Valencia in 1276. His first years of life are full of legends: the act of engender, the try of murder at the cradle...
He lived under the guard of the Templars, in Montsó, from his 6 to his 9 years. Being 13 years he married Leonor of Castille and being 27 with Violant from Hungría, with whom he had nine children, among them Pedro and the future king of the kingdom of Majorca, Jaume II.
More than because of his war deeds, among which the conquest of Majorca (1229) and of Valencia (1236) are remarkable, he was known because of the laws and franknesses he granted to the places he governed, because of his paternal governing and because of his frankness, opening, loyalty and attention. All these characteristics turned him into one of the most loved men in his age and in the posterity.
THE HISTORIC DEED
The conquest of Majorca
The 12th of September of 1229 the group of ships of the king Jaume arrived to Santa Ponça aiming to conquest the island of Majorca, until then inhabited by the Muslims and under the reign of Abû Yahyâ. Two days later, and once the Christian army was installed at the North side of the city, began the siege of Madina Mayurqa, the capital of the kingdom, that came to its end the 31st of Decemberof 1229 with the conquest of the city, fact that we commemorate with the festivity of the Standard.
Once the city was conquered, just two resistant groups (of the region of Artà and the ones at the mountains) had to be subdued; the first ones surrendered easily, but the others did not until about the middle of 1232.
The island was divided into two parts: one for the monarch and the other to distribute between the nobles of Catalonia and Aragon that took part at the conquest.
